  • West bay and surf salinity

SALTWATERRECON camaras show discolored water in the surf and bay . Is it from Harvey fresh water you think ? Has anyone been fishing in either to report the normal presence of fish or not ?

I caught two slot reds in the surf yesterday waiting for my friend to get on the island. Very brown on the surf but clear after the first sand bar. they were just ambushing mullet where both waters meet. people were killing reds and black drum with live shrimp. The water was a little fresh and tannic when I went gigging tuesday but seemed to be nice and clear. Also seen lots of bait fish in the water by westpointe when i went to take a look yesterday.

good information, but unfortunately it's going to push the fish into a couple of areas.

Yep he wanted the link. Plus I think that's just surface readings.

Yep... it was from fresh flows coming out of rivers.. That flow is curtailing pretty hard now so we should quickly see a return to some decent surf conditions.. .already been some fish caught.

Trininty, Sabine, and Big Lake will be the last to return.. all the water along the beach flows that way as well.

It would appear that a lot of fish would push out to the surf where the salinity is more to their liking .

They go deep and hug the bottom until they really have to. There's no studies that have addressed them leaving.. or maybe we've never seen a big enough influx. The surf population has always been bigger than the bay population... just a lot more water to cover and harder to locate. Even as bad as Galveston got, I still don't think it got bad enough to push them out of the bay. They can stand low salinity for several weeks or more, just not optimum.
