  • Chocolate bayou navigation and tide station

    Hey guys

Planning to fish chocolate bayou a few times and launch at lutes. Is the channel marked all the way up to lutes? Are their any hazards I should look out for other than Gettin out of the channel I know it gets shallow in a hurry all over chocolate. I have navionics platinum plus but unsure of the detail around there

I plan to just explore from lutes down to lost bay or 2004 bridge.

What tide station do y'all use to predict tides in that area alligator point?

    Thanks

Well you down want to eat anything north of 2004. I've fished chocolate a lot and I always launch at 2004 but have gone to lutes a few times through the bayou. I've never run shallow and I usually stay in the middle. If your south of 2004 the channel is marked all the way to icw. There are reefs all along the channel south of 2004. Be careful until you get used to leaving the channel I've run on a lot of reefs out there lol

So what I do when running a new place I always first get on my navionics phone app to start learning the area. I look at the map on satellite view. Study it. Then I usually will find a map that has the area that I'm trying to run (hook n line or whatever they are called). Once I have done that google earth on the computer is fantastic to look at and I will look at satellite view and go back in time to find a clear picture of the area. Usually I look at winter time dates after 2008 (hurricane Ike) because the tides are low and the bay is usually more clear. Easier to see obstructions.

Usually I just launch at lutes and run down the middle of the bayou to fish chocolate bay or west. Not sure of much of the fishing north of 2004. Main thing is for navigation is I try to stay in the middle of the bayou when running, it's pretty deep. If you are going to venture out of the channel I would go very slow and know the tides if you decide to hang around a shallow spot. The channel is marked somewhat a little north of the 2004 bridge. South of the bridge there are tons of spoil banks and reefs just outside of the channel. Go slow, and sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

As your running down south towards 2004 there is a opening on your left that is where the chemical plant is. On that R hand sweeping turn there is a shallow rock that is easy to hit on the right side a little ways off the bank. Stay in the middle of the bayou here.

That's about all I can remember as of now. It's easy to run just take your time and run it in the daylight first.

Also that ramp is not a 5 star ramp, and is pretty steep but it gets the job done. Also Barbara is a very sweet lady that keeps an eye on your truck in the parking lot!!
