  • Let's talk Galveston area snook!

I've seen little ones caught in cast nets, and more than a few small ones caught on hook and line here in the Galveston Bay Complex. Yesterday, a 12 incher was taken beneath my nose here in the bayou on a live scrimp. They have to be 24 inches to keep. So I was wondering, has anyone here ever caught a legal size snook in this neck of the woods? I know they're more plentiful the further south you get. I'm just wondering about Mouth of the Brazos to East/Trinity Bay.
From 1970-1997, true heaven on Earth existed on the banks of Bayou Cook. "Hey Dad, Thanks for buying the Camp."

I only have two MUST CATCH fish left on my Do Before I Die list. Snook is one, sailfish is the other.

Almost made the trip to South Texas last year to find the snook. If they start showing up further North that would sure make me a happy guy.

I think I read about an 18/20 incher caught in the Freeport harbor a year or two ago.

The snook up here are almost all Fat Snook. Its a cousin of the Common Snook. The Common Snook grows to huge sizes and a 24" fish is probably 4-5 lbs. The Fat snook on average is 12" to 18" (on average). I saw a guy caught a big Fat Snook about a week ago and it was about 20". You're catching them in the right area though. They come in to the bays in April and leave in Oct and Nov. I say they come into the bays but what would be more accurate is that they pass through the bays and go into rivers and larger bayous and spend the summer there. Most of the catches of them are during the fall when they are leaving the rivers and bayous. If you wanted to focus on them you'd have to spend more time fishing bayous and rivers above 2004 working the structure and overhangs that are up there. I've heard, over the years, just about each bayou from chocolate all the way to the Matagorda river has had a catch or 2 and those are accidental catches.

          good luck

Friend caught 2 about 3 weeks ago, biggest one was 19 inches. I thought I had a pic but can't find it. She was fishing live shrimp in the cold pass area. If I find the pic I'll post it. Never seen/heard of a keeper around Galveston.
