Hello West End Anglers! I'm new here. I've fished off and on over the years with not much luck. I just recently got into fishing more than I have in the past years. I have bought the Trout Support DVDs and various books to school myself. I am still having trouble with a few things. Just about, almost, every time I go out fishing I skunk. I go during the bite times on Tides4fishing, mainly the morning times. I do OK for the most part but I skunk a lot. I think I am picking the right areas just at the wrong times of the year or wrong times for the conditions. I'm planning on a fishing trip this Sunday with my cousin and I don't want to get skunked again this time. It can become very discouraging not catching fish just about every time you go out but for some reason I still go out again instead of selling all my gear like I say I am after most trips. I'm not looking for anyone's golden spot but rather more what areas should I fish this time of year, fall, winter, spring.
I understand that most of the reds and specks start to leave for the beach front and near shore around late summer early spring and the flounder follow closer to Oct. - Dec. and usually return around spring time. So the passes would be good around those times I would think. I am curious as to what areas I should pick in the summer months. I would think deep water so they stay cool? maybe with some structure? Like the Dear Islands? Any advice is good advice and I appreciate any input. Thank you in advance.

Hey guys why don't you post a response so you help more than just thus one guy. When I got started I loved having actual conversations to read that could help me. Anyways specs reds and flounder are here in the bays year round. They don't leave. They do move though. Flounder leave the shallow waters on late fall and hold in deeper water until spring mainly due to lower tides on the winter. Reds can be caught year round in the marsh but are thick in the marsh areas in fall due to spawning. Specs hold in deep water in winter usually but you can find some of the big girls cruising the flats and marsh in the dead of winter. Mostly over mud bottom since it holds more heat than sand. My rule of thumb for summer is closer to the beach or passes for specs. Mid Bay reefs for reds and specs. Any south shoreline in the summer should hold all three but the specs generally will be closer to the deeper water just outside of the marsh areas. By deeper water I mean 4-5 feet and beyond. Shallow is anything under 3 feet. Hope this gets you on the right track. Also ask as many questions that's what we are here for.

Also when I started getting serious my main hang up was my anchor. Cover more water. If it looks dead leave unless you have had a strike in the last ten minutes. My last five trips I've used an anchor maybe once or twice. If you have a trolling motor use it religiously.

A lot of us are tournament anglers or guides. A guides way of life is building his or her log and developing the patterns for good days so that information usually has a price tag attached to it. I only guide in winter and fall to early cold spring. I put videos up on YouTube to help those guys out specifically that struggle. I'm in agreement that sharing of techniques is a good practice. But what we where doing for this gentlemen was getting him some locations and spots that we wouldn't want to roll into and see 200 of you potlickers on because we gave coordinates after we post openly.

Your funny bro. Wouldn't it be nice to catch that one trout that we all know is out there. It's the real trouzilla. Some freakish 50" fish with a scar over its eye. Drinks motor oil.

I'd hammer down on that bad boy. Even if he's got an eye patch and half a fin. No excuses when it comes to landing him.

Hey I'm sorry. I get it. Good luck out there. I would like to start fishing tournaments but have neglected doing so.

I will give you the best advice ive ever been giving as a fisherman, Fish with your eyes, look for key elements, # 1 look for bait activity and how its reacting, is it long lazy jumps or sporadic short bursts and look in the water sometimes bait will not be on the surface and will be lower in the water column , #2 SLOW DOWN and scan your surroundings, pelicans, loons, seagulls, white birds against a shoreline are always a dead giveaway there is some kind of baitfish in the are and trout and reds are usually not far behind, #3 wind I fish windblown shorelines always have and its always produced, water may look pristine across the bay and its calm and looks great but in reality the bait has been pushed up on the opposite shoreline where the water looks bad and rough but the food is there and they gotta eat. This is just what ive observed and practiced since ive been doing this which has been about 18 years and it has always steered me in the right directions. pm me or text me and I can help you more 281-636-5532
