  • Monument Chevrolet Spectacular Big Trout

First of all, I want to congratulate everyone who weighed in, and survived yesterday on the water. This was, again, one of the toughest days of tournament fishing that I can remember. From what I can tell you, the air temperature never crested 40 degrees anywhere in the Galveston Bay complex. The water temperatures dropped from the upper 50's to the high 40's, the wind blew like no one's business, and the cloud cover never broke, and worst of all the tide dropped over 3 feet! That is not a recipe for a comfortable day!!

Ten teams brought their stringer to the weigh in, and all deserve cudos!

Tough, cold, windy conditions settled on the gulf coast Sat Jan 30th for the Monument Chevy Specktacular Series. WIth high velocity winds, waders faired best throwing corkies while finding protected waters.
Only 10 of the 27 teams weighed in their stringer of 3 trout. Big trout of the day went to the team of Weaver/Stevens at 7.12lbs. The next event will be Feb 27. www.specktourney.com for more details.

    1st-Randy Weaver/Dean Stevens - 14.51lbs
    2nd- Aaron Stillwagon - 12.43lbs
    3rd-Steve Soule/Mike Cubbage/Daniel Popavich- 11.53lbs
    4th-Joe Townsend/Ken Garza -10.38lbs
    5th-Mike Pickell/Daniel Marshall -10.31lbs
    6th-Randy Shipley/Charlie Williamson -10.09lbs
    7th- Leon Napoil/William Cauthen -8.33lbs
    8th-Judd Johnson/Ed James/Long -6.90lbs
    9th-Lynn Dixon/John Woodcock -3.92lbs
    10lth-Pat Mclennan/George Mata -2.09lbs

I want to personally thank Sal Bautista, Monument Chevy, and all the sponsors for putting on another great tournament. We should have some pictures posted soon.

Good job Steve and team on the 3rd place finish... The conditions were ridiculously miserable... The conditions that the teams fished through separates the men from the boys... Kudos to all; Steve your a animal hats off to you dude...

Waist deep water was no problem. It was actually warmer in the water. It was the wind freezing our hands making our fingers go numb, which made some of the bites really tough to feel. We got our bites we needed just could not land a few of the big girls. Congrats to all that caught fish yesterday.

Yeah, If DPop could just keep those big nasty girls on that Corkie.... LOL. You got all the big bites, I just had the fish that were trying to hurt me..

It's always great to fish with guys like you and Mike. We get to try it again next weekend with Mike and then Next month with just you and me. I swear that if it's that cold again I may have to quit on you, that was almost as bad as the leaky waders and pnumonia in 2002!!

Mike reminded me that I forgot one of the most important things that we did yesterday. We had 4 fish in the livewell, weighed 3, and released 3 in Mike's canal. Only 1 of the fish that we retained didn't survive. So, not only did we catch them, we put them back for someone to catch again another day.
The 4th fish was close to the 3 weigh fish and we didn't have time to cull on the water.

I use to fish seabrook flats at night in the winter. Man, it's for me to abuse my body like that.
