Advantage of Navigation Chip?

I just put an HDS-9 Gen 3 on my boat...I've seen several threads about navigation chips and wondered what advantage they give you. It seems the maps that came pre-loaded on the Lowrance are pretty good. What will a chip do for me beyond those maps?
