  • Rollover Pass 10-30-15

I really wanted to get in on the flounder before the limit changed so I took a chance and drove down to Rollover Friday. The tide was going out strong when we got there. Baited up a couple of double drops with live finger mullet and 2oz weight and tossed em in. 10 minutes in I was reeling in my first flounder. 16.5" so I threw it in the ice chest. Not to much later my wife pulled in her first ever flounder. 14.5". I kept it! Lost quite a bit of tackle to the rocks but I did catch another 15" flattie and put him in the box. My wife caught another flounder but it was too little so I made her kiss it and threw it back. She wasn't thrilled. the bite died down after the out going tide stopped so we took the dog for a run on the beach. Driving along you can see remnants of houses took out by Ike. There also a big iron post sticking out of the sand on the beach that would ruin your trip if you hit it night. After driving the beach we got another dozen finger mullet and went back. Now the tide was coming in but the rain was starting up. We didn't have rain gear and weren't getting any more bites so I donated the rest of my bait to a fellow angler and headed back home to Austin. Little did I know that while we were in Bolivar it had rained over 14.5" in Austin and serious flooding had occurred. I got stuck in traffic on 71 in between Bastrop and Austin and had to turn around due to creeks flowing over the highway. Made it back home safely though. The flounder I caught and saw being caught all seemed to be smaller males 18" or smaller. Hopefully the ladies will be showing up soon. I cleaned my flounder the next day using the "pocket method" where you debone the fish without cutting it down the spine. First time I'd ever cleaned a flounder that way but it turned out okay. Weird turning a fish inside out like that!Click image for larger version
