  • Jig head investigator

I've noticed for a while now that some jigs that claim to be a certain size usually look a lot bigger than others of the same weight and feel a little bigger too, some of yall might not think it's a big deal but if I want to throw an 1/8 Oz I want to know I've got an 1/8 out there for the depth and speed I'm fishing.
That being said I put some jigs on a mail scale (it's a friends and it's for... mmaaiiilll, yeah that's it. Mail.)
As I suspected the good folks at bass assassin don't know lead like they do plastic.
The 1/6 Oz screw lock heads come in at 5 grams as do the redfin magic flats heads, a quarter ounce is 7.087, eighth is 3.544 and a sixteenth is 1.772
the cheaper jigs I have by h&h, hogies and norton all fall close enough to advertised weight to keep my undies from bunching up.
I'll be contacting bass assassin about this soon unless any of yall have already dealt with this issue and can tell me why they run so much over.

I thought I was the only one doing that. Academy jig heads are ok. But alot of the other favorites are way off.

Are those Bass Assassin Pro Elite jig heads on the table? I think they are closer to "true weight," but I've never weighed one. I've always thought most manufacturers stated weight was for the lead head and not the hook.

The pro elites do run closer to true, I've never read anything about the hook weight not being included but it certainly seems to be the case.
Maybe I'm too particular about these things so I will probably be looking to pour my own soon.

It's true, they are all slightly different... consistency would be nice... but it's hard to find.

Just find a brand you like and experiment with their different sizes until you find something that works for you.

I've never read anything about the hook not being included; just an assumption I've made.

The Pro Elite may be the best jig head on the market.

Get em under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA)-you get 'treble' damages (no pun intended), so you may get 3 times what ya paid as a penalty, plus your money back for 1st pack. Trouble is court costs and attorney's fees, but I believe you can get those costs back also.

People have sued for a lot less-maybe even a class action??? I aint joking either-just think of the additional damages you could claim-like lost tournaments, lost State Records and IGFA record fish!!

IMO, the wrong weight is actionable-really. I aint a buddy of Norton-he was an OK guide but......... Red Bandana was better IMO.

Since you wrote that you always though manufacturers -stated- I figured you had read it somewhere.

I knew I could count on you for an interesting response to this.

I just think about the times when say, an 1/8 is what they want, your buddy is doing great and you are only getting a few because what you thought was 1/8 is more like a 1/4.
But then I'm told it's the Indian , not the arrow.

I dunno about that-my brother is zero for 5 so far on his bow hunting at my place so far!! I know one instance was due to the arrow-he used my cracked practice arrow! It didn't even penetrate the skin with a Rage 2" head and all the shock musta been in the carbon bolt that was cracked-bolt broke at feathers.

I always wondered about jighaid weights-thanks for the education!! Some 1/8ths seemed more like 1/4 oz.

Of course the weights differ. You could probably buy certified weights jig heads, but they'd probably be $20-$30 dollars a pack of 5.
I'm sure it'll be fun & interesting casting your own, but I think you'll find a lot more variation in your own castings than you will in mass produced jig heads. Make sure to wear a good respirator: lead fumes are noxious at best.

Some small fluctuations in weight wouldn't bother me Bruce but when they enter a whole new weight "class" like a 1/16 weighing more than an 1/8 it just makes me think I need to compensate from now on or as already suggested find some more consistent heads.

I've wanted to experiment with making some of my own jig molds for a while now anyway so I'm sure I'll get around to it, I can see it now.
I'll be out in the garage with a fine file and a scale trying to get them all "perfect" weight wise.
