  • Came back empty handed 10-16/17

I made the trip down to Galveston Friday without the boat this time. I just wanted to see if the flounder were running. I left Austin about 10:30am after trying to get some buddies to go with me but nobody could get away. I got to Galveston about 2:30pm and got a couple dozen live finger mullet at Smitty's. Left there and went to SLP and loaded up a couple of double drops with live ones and waded out a little bit and tossed em in. I set up my rod holders and put my rods in there and picked up my jig rod and started chunking and winding a chartreuse Gulp mullet. The tide was out but just starting to come back in. I was getting a few fast nibbles on the Gulp as soon it hit the water but couldn't hook up. Finally hooked up on the Gulp and turns out it was a whiting. Tossed it back and checked my live bait rods. The crabs had a field day gutting my mullets. Rebaited my two live bait rigs and tossed em back, cracked a cold one and sat in my chair and drank it. Didn't see anybody else catching anything so I finished my beer and started chunking the Gulp again. I picked up a little male flounder near the point in that little pocket on the end. He got off before I could get him in my hand. Checked the live finger mullet again to find the crabs had again had a field day with em. Repeated the previous process a few more times with no luck so I called it a day. I decided to try again in the morning so I got a room at the La Quinta on Seawall. My plan was to get up early and hit Rollover and get my limit and be gone before it got crowded. Unfortunately, I lost my right contact lens in my sleep and I had to wait until 9am until my doctors office in Austin could fax my prescription to the vision center at Walmart on Seawall. I have bad vision uncorrected and the combo of clear in one eye and blurry in the other was something I didn't want to mess with. I wasn't planning on staying so I didn't bring extras or my glasses. Since I was up early I decided to drive to the ferry landing and chunk a gulp until the doctors office opened. There were a couple of guys there fishing but nobody was catching anything. I got one quick nibble but didn't hook up. Tried chunking for about an hour no luck so I went back to Walmart and got my contacts. Hit the ferry and picked up some finger mullet at Bolivar Yacht basin. By the time I got to Rollover it was packed from end to end. The wind was blowing hard out of the NE about 20mph. The water was off color like chocolate milk. I observed for a while since there wasn't room to actually fish without rubbing elbows with someone. I saw a few golden croakers caught but no flounder so I left there and tried a spot the lady at the bait camp told me. it was on the south shore of the ICWW and directly in the wind. The wind was blowing in my face so hard I was having trouble making long casts and backlashing. Left there and decided to either try the ferry landing on the Galveston side again or back to SLP. By this time it was 3pm and the ferry landing was pretty crowded so I went back to SLP. I hate fishing in crowds with all the line tangling. Got back to SLP around 4 and set my baits out again. This time not even the crabs were biting. The water was much dirtier from the wind than the previous day. Fished until sundown let my bait go and headed home.

I have to say that you sure gave it a heck of a try, and drove a lot of miles. The flounder haven't really moved to the passes yet. Let the water temp drop below 70 and then come back.

Sorry to hear you came up with an empty cooler and the drive from Austin. I complain about driving back to Houston tired, still having a boat and fish to clean. You get an A for effort that's for sure.

Thanks. I grew up in Houston before moving to Austin so I know the area pretty well. With the exception of West Bay. At least by boat. I used to wade fish a spot right near the causeway on the other side of the marina from GB&T with a buddy back in the day at the end of 91st off Teichman Rd. We called it the "Green Roof" because one of the bay houses had a green roof. It's gone now thanks to Ike. Now I have a boat and fish the jetties and East Bay for trout. I really want to learn West Bay better but last time I tried fishing over by Harborwalk or getting to the Diversionary canal I kept running aground.
