Yesterday I hosted two guests on a trip with Capt. Dana Bailey.
We fished Trinity and Upper Galveston bays.
You are not going to believe the following but it is the honest to God truth.
The shrimp are fully into their migration from the marshes and the shallows into the bay system and ultimately out into the Gulf. Fish and birds were working the little buggers over. If you could find the birds, or even spot shrimp popping out of the water, you found trout. All day the four of used only one type of lure -- lime Tidal Surge split tails. You needed to keep the lure within two feet of the surface and work it rapidly and erratically. We fished in six to eight foot deep water.
Most of the trout we caught were in the 12 to 14 inches range but nevertheless by 10:15 we had a limit of 30 keepers. We kept fishing for 45 minutes, catch and release only. FOR THE DAY WE CAUGHT OVER 150 TROUT (for real)! At least half a dozen times all four of us had trout on at the same time! We also caught one 35 inch red, two gafftop, five sand trout and one Spanish mackerel.
We stopped fishing at 10:45 and by 12:30 were at the original Ninfa's on Navigation eating lunch and drinking margaritas.
I will never have another fishing day like that in my life....but I am going to try!!!!
