  • My first kayak...I'm pumped!

Moving the scanoe through the water is like moving a tank sometimes...just heavy and slow. I've resorted to walk-in wading a lot lately, but I'm realizing how much this is restricting my options on locations. Took the plunge today and bought a lightly used Wilderness system Tarpon 160. It came with a rudder installed, paddle (which I'll probably upgrade), anchor, anchor trolly, crate with rod holders, and some other rod holding mounts. Very excited to test this beast out and explore/fish some new waters. Looking forward to posting some fall fishing pics up.

We'll , you should be pumped . That's a fine fishing platform. My first kayak was a grey 16 foot Tarpon , around 2002 .After trying to turn it in the wind and current with much effort , I got a rudder . It made a huge difference. A pulley and anchor is another great feature . You need a cushion seat of some sort.

Yeah Plugger, the seat is the only negative I could find while browsing reviews of this model so hopefully I can figure it out

Here is a LINK to a long discussion about seat issues ( and solutions) for a similar yak.

Rich knows. He's a regular here and TKF and a wealth of information. Nice link.

I have an air cushion that can be adjusted via a two way valve . Small and comfortable .

I had to look up scanoe . It's a heavy , clunky canoe thing . Your kayak will be far superior . Being 16 feet long , it's heavier than most , but a lot lighter than a scanoe .

Yeah, I'm surprised a lot of people on here have not heard of scanoes. I grew up in southwest Louisiana and they were used a lot in the backwaters of Sabine. It has helped me thus far, but it was time to evolve. I actually read that article on TKF and see Rich posting a lot of good info over there. Thanks guys

One thing to remember....and this comes up a LOT.....please don't make or buy a kayak trolley/cart that fits into your scuppers. Scuppers are the weakest part of any yak.

There are tons of good videos on YouTube showing how to make yak carts out of PVC. They fit in the lengthwise grooves (not the scuppers) on the bottom of the yak and are invaluable when you have to drag the yak to the water. Add a pull line from the cart to the bow of your yak, and you don't have to strap them down. richg99
