  • Motor maintenance...Static Flush vs Running Flush

I have an '08 Yamaha 150hp 4 stroke outboard...I have always done a static flush (using the hose connection on the side) after each use. While the engine is still warm from use, I connect the hose and let the hose run for 10 mins with the motor off. This is done while the boat is in the lift and out of the water.

A buddy recently told me I should be doing a running flush after each use. Connecting the hose to muffs and running the motor at idle for 10 mins. He said this allows the thermostat to open and water to get to all places in the motor.

My theory (and other's I've read on the interwebs) is that doing a static flush while the engine is warm will sufficiently flush all parts of the motor.

Anybody have an opinion on this?

Had repairs done to my 175 Etec 2 years ago to replace rings & seals & the mechanic told me to run the engine while flushing. It pressurizes the unit and the seals to get a complete flush. 2-3 minutes was sufficient. I used to do a static flush even after running & warm but until I had to replace the seals twice I've been doing a running flush. Buddy of mine had the same issues as I did with his 225 Mercury Optimax & now does running flushes as well.

You use the ears on the lower unit or just run it with the hose screwed into the back of the supplied grommet?

I believe you have to use the ears on the lower unit if you're going to run it.

I just plug the hose into the grommet port on the motor, turn the water on & let it flow for about 20 seconds, start the motor up & run it for about 2-3 minutes. Ears work fine too. The mechanic said it'll work either way.

I always idle my 150 Johnny while flushing with ears.
