Fished with Mark Sloan out of his Pioneer. We were on the water by 6:30 drifting the reefs in and around Conferate. Threw touts, Devil Eye, Corky, spoon, broken back, kitchen sink. Nada. Saw some of the other tournament folks out there as well looking about as strong as we were. Stuck with this till 11ish and went over to the east side of South Deer. Saw ONE mullet and finaly hooked up but it was a red. Nothing more happened. Decided to change tactics. Went to some spots that have been reliable in the back lakes as that is the water we know best. Greens...nothing. Karankawa...nothing. Now it is 1 and we make it over to the pass area. Head into Church Hill. Finally boat a fish but it is a flounder. Three casts later, another one, but lost it at the boat. One of those bite and hold flounder bites and I tried to pop him too soon so he let go. By now it is nearly three, we have no trout, and we're hungry.
Had a good time out there...even on slow days like that I still love being on the water. I am now stockpiling crab for the drum tournament for March.
Congrats to those who won and those who caught A trout!
