I hit the Galveston surf this morning with my fly rod, and wound up outfishing the bait soakers. A chartreuse over white clouser and a chrome clouser were the ticket. Very early bite - all over by 8:00am. The dolphin that showed up didn't help.
All of my fish were in the first gut.Walker

I gotta say - it is extremely satisfying to be there, catching something every few minutes, with the guys with live shrimp and popping corks only occasionally catching anything.
But a lot of it is what Kenny said in the original post - rookie mistakes. They were all out too far.
I had my kayak. When I got to the spot, there about a half dozen guys wading - looked to be standing on the second bar. I got into my kayak and started paddling away from them so as to not be potlicking. I was paddling inside to get away from them, as they were all casting outside.
I saw what looked like nervous bait activity right there in the first gut. Very first cast wound up with an 18 incher in the yak.
I really, really think that the time that I have spent hunting bonefish and redfish has taught me a lot about looking and reading the water.
I stayed inside the second bar most of the time. All of the fish that I caught were there.
I also set a PB for mullet. I landed 4 mullet - all foul hooked. The mullet were crazy thick. I gotta say - a fight with a good sized foul hooked mullet is something - and you know it is a mullet the whole time. At times, there was a sea of a zillion mullet eyes all around. When that happened, I moved away. Pretty hard to get the attention of a trout when she is at a smorgasbord.
When I pulled out, I think I was the only one with a limit. A few of the other guys came over and looked at my stringer. One asked "And you did that with a fly rod?"
Life is good. Some days, life is really good.Walker

I caught a limit of specs by 6:12pm on June 4 and another limit on June 5 by 8:22am in the surf in JB all on the same quart of shrimp because they are so small you get like 100 of them to a quart. The evening ones went 18-20 inches and the ones the next morning went 16-18 inches. I don't know how to post pictures but if anyone wants to PM me with a number I can send them to your cell phone then you could post them. Thanks

Nice job DST. Where's your place in JB? 18"-20" are very solid fish.Originally posted by DeerSlayerToo View PostI caught a limit of specs by 6:12pm on June 4 and another limit on June 5 by 8:22am in the surf in JB all on the same quart of shrimp because they are so small you get like 100 of them to a quart. The evening ones went 18-20 inches and the ones the next morning went 16-18 inches. We caught a bunch in the first gut in JB as well when it filled in. I haven't seen the water so far out before while the tides at the house on the bayside were normal. We were driving the golf cart on what is typically the first bar late night.
