Wear a PFD whatever you do I would not fish the surf anywhere near the bridge very bad currents go down around the cell phone tower on freeport side much safer

First and foremost that area is dangerous and a lot of folks drown there each year so be sure to wear a PFD when wading in that area.

From a fishing standpoint it can be great and the baits that work in the surf in other areas will also work there.

X1000 on what Barham and BH said. You can easily drown no matter how good a swimmer you are. Plus, the sand washes out from under your feet and whoosh, you are swimming and being swept away and pulled down. I prefer east or west of there. If trout are running the surf, why risk drowning when you can fish a little ways away from the pass itself.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. When the weed is in , fish on galveston side, other than that there is lots of beach on the freeport side,
worst case 3oz weight and double drop hooks with dead shrimp.
          that is my go-to

The pass claims 6 - 8 lives a year. Remember the acronym PFD and use it when fishing there. Or you will wash up on the beach in between the pass and Surfside and some beach jogger will be scarred for life finding your body with crabs hanging off whatever is left. Bad deal all the way around.

My advice is don't go by yourself. Always have someone with you when you're there. Fishing in the bay side isn't bad but there is definitely some current going through there during a good tide change.

Personally , I find the Galveston side SLP bridge area one of the most dangerous places to wade fish . The current is usually moving too fast to catch anything but a ride into eternity . Fish the surf away from the pass or the bay side . Better fishing and still dynamic enough to drown you without a PFD .

Hey Fisherman, thanks for the Head's- Up !! I use to Race Jet Skis in my younger days, and have full respect about under tow, RIP Current, but if all you have is a fishing pole and caught up in current, you better have on your life jacket. But thanks for all the great advice.
