  • 1998 Yamaha 150 problem

while running boat , engine warning buzzer comes on and boat shuts down. I turn key off and turn back on in one minute, no buzzer. Take back off and go one to two miles and same thing happens.Turn key back off again, wait one minute, turn key on , no buzzer, take back off again. I just had a new water pump on it. I have 20lbs of water pressure each time it shuts down. Engine does not seem to be hot for it to take off that quick every time. Can anyone help me on what the problem might be. Thanks

Do you have plenty of water coming out of the pee hole ?

If you do, it sounds like the thermostat is stuck and will not let water into the rest of the motor.

Agree with Root Canal-or your engine oil pump is not working-same happened to mine-pull cowling, there is a little oil reservoir on port side of motor, if it is low, alarm and e-shut down happens. If it is low, your oil pump is not working-that little reservoir is there to allow you time to get back to dock-you can manually fill it and alarm should stop going off-that little emergency reservoir should always be full-it has a sensor in it and when ya pull the black cap off the reservoir (I aint talking about the main oil reservoir), sensor must be pulled out to refill it-you'll see-even a caveman can do it. I always carry extra oil in case pump quits and that emergency reservoir gets low-as long as it's filled, boat runs like no issue. Sometimes trimming up the motor makes the alarm quit because the small amount of oil in that reservoir may cover the sensor so it thinks it's ok until you trim down and with key on, alarm buzzes again (don't run motor, just turn key). either Thermostat or oil pump. Good luck-both fixes aint too expensive-call Evans Marine for repairs.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. Checked emergency reservoir and it was full on top line. I did trim motor down all the way when coming in yesterday to keep front of boat from bouncing. That could have possible triggered buzzer. Should I raise tilt and run boat to see if that fixes it or still have it looked at?

That would be a good guess.
Your motor is 17 years old. If they are original your lucky they work at all.

Your motor probably has (2). One at the top on each side.
They are very easy to replace. Make sure you put a new gasket on each and I would also change the bolts holding the cover plate.
Also be sure to use an anti-seize lube on the bolts so they don't lock-up.

Here's a link. Select your motor year and model for a parts diagram.

Thermostat is my guess since oil pump is working.
