I scouted the shoreline today with Efish (Eddie) in my boat. I trolling-motored down the shoreline (over 1/4 mile), in and out to deeper water to find the best wading spots for everyone. The whole shoreline goes from 0 feet to 3 feet with a hard sand bottom, There is a drop off at 4'-about 50 yards from the shoreline-and the bottom becomes shell and scattered/sand shell and gets deeper as you wade out. Depending on the tide (say it's normal) everyone will be able to wade out far enough to reach the shell reefs without getting over 4 feet up on your waders. Some spots are better than others, but I know from experience where these spots are. For a small fee I can be bribed to put boats on the prime spots. (Kidding--they are all good).
I spent most time trolling around this morning and would have liked to wade and fish more, but getting this trip to work and maybe getting everyone on some good spots was more important. So I slow trolled all the way down the shoreline at wading depth-parallel to the shoreline-and managed 3 reds around 22-24", 2 18" flounders, and one 18" trout. Eddie tried but was only able to land 3 undersized flatties and 3 undersized reds. Spent most of my time with my stick pin feeling the bottom. You plus-sized guys (Moe-HAR) and others don't have to worry about getting bogged down in mud on this trip.
So far I am looking at the 14th of March. How does that work out for everyone? I was going to ask the kayakers to try to find a boat to get in, but if that don't work out, you can launch your yaks at Latitudes-1.5 mi-or the Top Water Grill ramp-1.1 mi-and paddle across the small bay to the TC levee (straight across) and meet up with everyone on the shoreline. If you leave before daylight, HAVE A LIGHT so nobody runs over you....you have to cross the Dickinson channel to get there.
A lot of you a probably unfamiliar with this area. If you have a chart of the Dickinson Bay area or Google Earth the area, the co-ordinates of the shoreline (about the middle of where I will suggest so we can sorta stay together) is: 29 27' 35.87" N and
94 56'30.78" W.
