  • Broke the skunk and Learned new areas to fish

Friday, Son in law broke the skunk , found a lonely croaker, then the rest of us started catching , croaker, whiting and lots of dink trout.
Daughter even did a double on the last cast of the day.
Started out 8am when straight out of kema to the platform, nothing then worked our way towards redfish island and fished around
there ( watch out for the waves ) I was expecting them this time. and had a good excape route . Fished inside the island
where the rocks were east of me then we went towards eagle point.
One of the key features of the day was the tide, it was up high at 8am and going out and we were able to find places out in the bay where there was current changes, Long lines of suds , not much of a temperature diffrence didnt seem to hold bait or birds , but noticeable. (2.) The place known as tods dump , is much longer than the charts show. I could see in the distance a place that looked
like a current rip or a set of waves that never moved , at first I thought it was another on coming ship wake that I was going to have to
fight or run, even pulled the ancor and got out the binoculars , kids told me its not moving, I eventually agreed , I kept my eye on it
and as the south wind came up and the out going current became stronger we finally headed straight to my tracks from eagle point
back to kema. I have stayed away from that area, seems to be a place you can get into trouble fast , lots of obstructions and gotchas.
On the way back there was what looked to be a 2X12 about 12 feet long floating free, easy to see .
Somewhere over by kema, there seems to be a magic line where it goes from ok to nasty rough , maybe two or three miles out.
There were hundreds of what I call tree ducks, out there, I began to smell a distint odor, told son inlaw stinky ducks then I saw maybe ten gulls and a pelican all around a spot , I wondered then if I had come accross a feeding bunch of specks. I have read of the stink, but never experienced it. In that same area I noticed the water changed to chocolate milk, figured it was from kema channel. Seems that these things were all telling me fish. I was on a dead line and did not get to test my thoughts and it was really getting nasty. I was glad to say , I am starting to notice them as I move around, .
The skunk is over. I hope i get out one more time before we start 2015

      Glad you got on them.

Todd's can be a dangerous also if your on the east side near the reef. Big waves from the ship channel can swamp a boat quickly.
You can fish safely on the west side.

leaving the redfish area, heading 225 to eagle point. seems todds dump would have a general east west layout and staying on the basic north side
would be somewhat safer than on the basic south side. ( just want get my marbles lined up here )

Thanks for the detailed report ! Glad ya'll got some fish ... Those croaker and whiting are good fried up fresh . Be careful out there when it's windy . You ought to fish more protected Clear Lake when it's windy. .

            Ok.. I see your point.
The north side is were I've seen boats get into trouble. Must have to do with the bottom structure. But that's the side
that tends to have 2-3 foot waves slamming into the reef, while I am on the other side and don't have an issue.

Hog-If you launch from that area, check out a Hookset map and pick a calm day to travel out to the leases on the bay this time of year. It takes a few trips to get some good spots (favorites) out there, but you'll probably run across some trout out there this time of year-especially on colder days since the water is a little deeper out there-and there are some shell/mud bottoms that hold fish. It's a big area, so don't be afraid to do a lot of drifting and exploring. I suggest fishing around the wells, but be careful and keep your eyes open for old pipes sticking up out of the water around the rigs. My favorite is "A" lease-it is also the closest to Eagle Point. Hope this helps.

Ill check out the basic south side of todds dump next time and see what happens, I have had two occasions now where thank God I was not on anchor and had the motor running. I have learned not to get comfortable on the bay, Those big rollers have challenged me twice now. I think I am going to go with a float on anchor line, so I can just throw it off and come back when the waves pass. Learned the timing, when even with the stern start looking and be ready.

Sunday , went over and parked in the lot a eaglepoint marina and watched, Tide was low and I could see that one place,
that the waves break over, I was please to find the EP place and look at it from land, it would be a great place to ditch if
the weather catches you out there or you catch a bunch and need ice/gas or something to drink. I did not go inside.
If you know where to look you can see the waves breaking on the redfish place and find out where you dont want to be.
The waves break there at EP but not as large.
