  • baitcast reel/rod suggestions

So I'm making the switch to baitcast from spincast and would like some suggestions from you guys on perferred models/combos. I will be using it to wade fish the bays targeting reds and specs. I plan to mostly use soft plastics but would like something that could work a suspension and tops as well. Am I asking too much for a rod/reel combo that is suitable for all types of lures? I know this is a broad questions. Thanks in advance.

I've also become a fan of the H&H rods. Go check out the Houston fishing show in January so you can check them all out at once. The prices will be better as well.
As far as reels go, I mainly stick to shimanos, from the cruxis to the core and they're all solid. Academy's H2O reels aren't bad either. I've got 3 I purchased for $25 each 3 years ago that are still doing great.

Get as expensive rig as you can afford; you wont regret it and what they said, too!

Whatever you wind up with, plan on spooling it up and putting a rubber casting weight to take it out for practice. You'll be amazed how much you backlash starting out and It's much better to do it in a field or parking lot than when you're going for a big lunker.

I grew up throwing a baitcast, but when i was 15 or 16 I started catching a ton of bass in the backwaters of Sabine River on this bait called a rocket shad (very small spinner) and had trouble throwing it very far with the baitcast I was using at the time. So I started throwing a spin and could zing that bait. Crazy in retrospect, but I've only used a baitcast 2 or 3 times since then.

I have 2 Diawa Coastal reels and 1 Shimano CSV reel. They are both saltwater reels. I use an All Star WR1 rod. I bought them for $25 to $30 on sale. If you wash the reels and eye lids on the rod, you won't have any problem. I clean the reels about twice a year. Rods and reels are a matter of preference. Like it's been said before: buy something you can afford, get something good, because you're going to use it for a long time. Hope this helps. Lord Bless.

I'm loving my Lews BB1 Pro and Tournament Pro... great little reels and holding up nicely.

there are tons of great rods out there.

I think the trick on getting rid of the backlash is to be sure and spit while your applying this method.
