  • Trailer bunks, carpet or buy ready to install?

I have a 1970 Glastron, 17 ft boat and need to replace the bunk boards on the trailer. Would you buy treated wood and carpet it yourself or go with prefabricated bunks? Is their a brand that stands out? The boat is pretty light... Thanks

....just replace the wood in the bunks yourself. Instead of going with carpet go with some slick stuff on top and seal the wood before you install it on the trailer. Carpet i tend to believe will if the boat sits on there for any length of tine will hose up the hull.

Do you mean damage the hull, please explain?
To the OP just replace the bunks with treated wood and install carpet using T50 stapler and Monel staples.

Carpet damages aluminum hulls due to electrolysis. I'm pretty sure a Glastron is going to be ok. I have heard of treated lumber causing problems with trailer corrosion due to the copper content. Anybody else? And yes, Monel STAINLESS staples like Kenny said, otherwise the carpet will fall off in a few weeks.

I used to have a15ft trihull Glastron. I changed the boards on the trailer and welded some 5/8 rod iron to the sides of the trailer. put artificial carpet on the trailer and running boards. I was in freshwater not saltwater. Don't know to much on saltwater. Sounds like the people here know what they talking about. Lord Bless.

If your carpet causes you to have troubles launching..(sticky stuff some days) ..then consider the wood with pvc slicks on it. Nothing like having the boat slide off when you back her down and just tap the brakes. Of course, you don't want to undo the winch hook until you are very near the water.

Go with treated.... even if you use the slick plastic they'll hold just enough moisture to start the decay process. The carpet holds even more. I picked mine up at McClaines (bunk slicks).
