  • Broken BIG DADDY ROD

So I get that wonderful thump on the end of my line and set the hook into what feels like a log. Start a nice brawl with about a 36" red while in my boat. So the two of us go back and forth when I finally get her next to the boat, BAM my BIG DADDY custom rod snaps into (4) pieces and my line ends up breaking. Could this be from a bad blank the rod was made from. I have never had one of my good rods break like this. I wonder if he will replace it?

how does a rod break in 4 pieces while fighting a fish? I can understand two, but four?

It shattered. It broke about a foot from the tip, then like a domino effect just kept snapping until I was holding about a 2ft handle with a reel. it all happened very fast.

I'm no rod expert but playing a yard long red has the potential for breaking a rod . The lighter the rod the more likely to break it . One certainly can't horse in a bull red or high stick it on the surface next to the boat . Bummer dude .

Mark it down as fishing liability. Now go get you a hookspit and thank me later.

I was high sticking and horsing a bit. Maybe one of those hook spit rods is in my near future.

I landed a, I would venture to guess, 40 pound black drum in 15 foot of water over a oyster lease. Caught on hookspit wader light and lews speed spool, 12# stren mono. Convinced me. My buddy, Superspook loaned me one of his cocahoe queens to entice the bite.

                Bad blank in my opinion.

If its a bad blank, its going to break sometime within the first couple decent fish. After that it tends to be something happened to the rod without the person knowing. Something as simple as accidentally jamming the tip into the ceiling or anything can cause a splinter in a high grade blank. That will cause a weak spot. If not that then its user error.

High sticking a big fish with lots of stamina will do that to a graphite rod. Could have weakend it previously by hitting it on something or having something put pressure on a point. Graphite rods are pretty fragile. You won't break them outright but the damage will show up later on a nice fish.

....dude. I have spent the money on some high dollar rods thinking that it would improve my fishing. St.Croix to some custom rods that were supposed to fir the bill as far as response and being very sensitive when you need it.

You know what? I seem to always go back to those old "Classic" rods they sell at Academy!

Catch just as many fish as I have with a $500 rod...and they get replaced if one breaks!!

Put a rod sock on your rods.Especially if you put'em in the back of a truck.Smallest nick makes a weak spot in your rod.
