I know all the slot reds we've caught have had them in their stomachs, more than one at that.. I wish we could use them as bait..
Yeah, and all the muchachas they call me big pappa, when I throw pesos their way!

If they are feeding on sand eels, it's time to put some Norton sand eels, and jr's in the wade box. Ask KEY LIME KAYAKER about sand eels. He'll know.

I've read that sand eels are the most prevalant bait left during the winter. I usually switch to them about this time. However, plastic shrimp bounced on the bottom look similar.

          Sand eels

The Norton sand eels, TTF Trout killers, and the Bass Assasin all mimic the sand eel. All the Reds we have been catching lately have been on these baits. Catching a few shallow on the Hunchback but very few on spoons.
Definately need to have some in your box right now. Gater

Have the plum and chart., salt and pepper in the box. Like the salt and pepper the most on a clear water day. TTF are good as well, but the best for me has been the AP special, salt water assis. plum and chartuese.

Eels and worms are present in the bay year round. That's part of why soft plastics are so effective. I couldn't tell you a ton about their movements, but all fish will eat them. Green, brown, olive, red. All good colors for representation.

I have a biologist that fished with me several times in the past. He just PM'd me on the other board. I will try to get him over here, very knowledgable guy.

Your eel imitations will catch a bunch of fish in most situations, in the winter though, mullet and glass minnows are more consistent at attracting big trout and reds.

Steve, is this the reason why Corkie are so good in the winter because they look like a mullet?

You got it Mike!! Mirr-O-lures, 51, 52, Catch2 and 5, topwaters all seem to attract the biggest fish. This time of the year they want an easy target that will stave off hunger for a long time. The tops and SLOW suspeners take it to the next level. They can be held in the fish's face much longer and that's usually way to tempting..

I threw away a catch 5 and hung the catch 2 several times trying to keep the lure slowed down enough that they can't say no. Takes some efort and you will loose some baits, but the pay off is BIG TROUT!

How about super spook JR? I do not have any mirro-o-lures in the bag, but I have several of the super spooks. Jamin has my Corkies if I ever get them from him!

Sounds like slow is the way to go!
