Me and a buddy fished Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. We had a tough time finding fish but had a great time! Water was in great shape and the winds were very cooperative. Just not the fish. Seemed like we had trouble finding moving water.
Sat: After finding the tides a bit low to fish the diversionary canal (that area is new for me), we headed south and fished the outside of the geotubes at Snake Island Cove. Threw gulps, chicken boys and bass assassins. Landed a small keeper trout, a 19 inch red and a pretty large skipjack. Water was in good shape and there was lots of bait fish.
Sun: Headed straight to Snake Island Cove... no bait fish outside the tubes so we drifted inside the cove. TONS of bait fish but the water didn't appear to be moving. We tossed top waters, gulps and various other soft plastics. We caught 1 rat red. Ran north to Carancahua Cut... water was clear to the bottom and bait was abundant. Saw some guys catching a few on live bait but we were committed to arties . Nothing.
While running back from the north shoreline towards Jamaica Beach and saw what appeared to be a pod of red fish moving in a big group. Threw rattle traps at them and found out they were actually a large school of Jack Crevalle. My buddy hooked up on one and it was on for a good 30 mins. Almost spooled him twice before we boated it. Would post a pic but can't figure out how to from my tablet.
Not what we were after but it was fun. I continue to learn the bay and am feeling more comfortable running around... even if I'm not catching limits.
