I have been shopping for hand held vhf radios of late. Many of the newer models have a "plot to dsc" or plot to distress call feature. You push a button on the radio and the radio transmits a distress signal to the Coast Guard with your gps coordinates. You have to register the radio with the guvmint but there is no subscription. The uniden Msc135 and 235 both have that feature.

If you are going into the backcountry, the best device in my opinion is the Spot Gen3. I borrow one and carry it in the backcountry when fishing in CO. Subscriptions are kind of pricey......unless you need to use it.
