  • Very Strange fish spotted but no pic

    Guys
I already told Kenny about this but tell me if you guys have ever seen or can help us identify this fish. I unfortunately couldn't get a pic.

Last weekend when it got real windy and the west end got that muddy water I was out by one of the reefs by my house. Swimming around the reef was a very large some 7-8 ft. long with a very wide body fish or shark. The wind was pushing me around pretty good but it was very large. The dorsal fin was more like a fishes fin so Im thinking not a shark, and the tail was very large tip to tip. Here's the thing. Its base color was a light tannish, but it had spots and lines on its body that believe it or not look like whale shark markings. Honestly guys it looked just like a sturgeon from the top it even had the little ridges on its back to tail. I've never seen one up close but have seen pics. I tried desperately to get a lure to it, like I would have stood a chance with my trout rod, but it ignored me and the boat. finally it got spooked and disappeared in the muddy water. Have any of you ever seen anything like that out there? It was only swimming in 4-5 ft. of water but circling the reef a lot for about 10 min. I wish I would have been able to get a pic of at least the tail but couldn't. Very strange.

Did you see the head ? Marking on the back might be a sawfish.

I could never get a good look at the head. But I never even considered a saw fish and that almost describes it perfectly. Are they in these waters?

I thought of that. Definitely not a gar. Ive seen several saltwater gars big and small and its skin was smoother not scaled

I've actually caught a very small sawfish, so I know presactly what they look like. You had me with the tannish skin, but spots and lines threw me off, as well as the fish like dorsal fin. Sawfish have 2 dorsal fins that are more like a shark's. Sounds to me like a big gar. I've seen them that big before.

That's what it must have been but its size was so intimidating. I've never seen a gar that big before
