  • Deeper Water?

I've been reading reports on various message boards where guys are taking trout and reds in deeper water...like 8 - 10' deep. If I'm coming out of Jamaica Beach, where are my best bets for finding deeper water? Thanks in advance.

I'd say SLP guts depending on how strong the tides , up Chocolate Bayou , drifting mid bay reefs , the causeway , and off Campbells and Sand Island , the drop off between a cut and Intracoastal canal . The jetties and Galveston Bay rigs/ reefs if not in West Bay . During the heat of summer , it's like finding fish in winter , they go deep to find a desirable temperature . They can be in shallow early in the day then move deeper as it gets hotter .

Intracoastal canal is a good place but try and find a drain or slew that runs off into it and right at the edge either on bottom or a extra long leader. I am not familiar with the area close to JB but this time of year I like the deeper waters and always with a moving tide or preferably a nice current. Be ready when a push boat is coming and also when passing or a small amount of boat travel that stirs the sand and water up a small amount.
Mud minnows work well fishing this way or if you are savy with arties I would imagine maybe something like a gulp with lots of that smelly stuff on it that they sell. I prefer the live bait or fresh cut.

"Actually they go deep, because they're food goes deep" - but like Plugger mentioned above those are all good places to start to look. There's a lot of deep water in Trinity and Lower GBay. Find the reefs for the trout, the reds all an altogether different story.

TroutSupport.com developed the 'Bays and Shoreline Redfish DVD' aka the Deepwater Reds DVD specifically for that purpose. It's nearly 2 hours long and jammed packed with info for finding and catching reds in deep waters like bayous, rivers, open bays, and cuts. Don't take my word for it though, plenty of testimonials out there for it.
