  • Personal best and 7/17 report

Being the rookie I am, every trip presents an opportunity for me to get excited with fish that you guys probably catch all the time. I landed an 18 inch trout this morning in the flats north of Tiki island, making it my new personal best. The bite was incredible today. I was on the water around 0530, starting catching around 0630, and from 0700-0800 I pulled in 2 reds (19 inch and 17 inch) appox. 12 specks (most around 12 inches, but did land my 18 and a 16 inch), and caught my first bonnet head shark (21 inchs). I got SOAKED for my efforts today, but had a blast! In true greenhorn fashion, I used live shrimp. I wish i had picked up croaker today (20/20 hind sight). I did put on my top dog for about 15 mins, but quickly reverted.

All the fish were caught in approx. 4 foot of water with a popping cork.

Good job! There is nothing wrong with it at all... Different strokes for different folks..... I'be been fish the salt since I was a little kids, so for about 22 yrs and I still fish with live bait the majority of the time... If I throw artificial it's normally to pass time while a soak live bait...

Weelcome to the salt, best of luck to you

Good write up Jimmy! I dig the excitement.

Hey, an 18" speck won me a couple hundred dollars a few years back.

Sweet! Still remember my first speck (live shrimp rock groin), first topwater trout (sportsmans rd skitterwalk), first red (sportsmans rd dead shrimp), and first flounder (bayou vista jig).

I bet you are really proud of that fish and that is what matters. The best fisherman is the one enjoying himself the most!
