  • A little help for some out of towners...

Myself and a few friends will be down in Galveston staying at some townhouse in Pirates Cove from this Friday 13th - Monday 16th. We are all newbies to the saltwater fishing, and Coe suggested I join the forum for a little advice. I was hoping some of yall could help point us in the right direction to catch a few fish this weekend. Any advice on bait setups and locations we could try would be greatly appreciated. We hope to have Friday evening, full days Saturday and Sunday, and Monday morning to devote to fishing. We will not have a boat with us, only kayaks. Thanks in advance for any advice, and feel free to PM me if you dont want to post publicly.

Welcome aboard. Need to introduce yourself on the Welcome Board...Not a kayaker, but some here go in at the State Park. Also look at the Kayak section on here. Live shrimp under a popping cork is hard to beat. Hope thius helps.

Do you know how to rig a popping cork? Do not use those wire leader types-that's for idiots IMO unless you are targeting spannymacs. #8 Mustad Treble about 18-24" below cork-no stupid swivels at hook-straight tie it. I buy the weighted cork with like 50 # mono line on it made by manufacturer, cut the heavy line about 5" below cork, then I tie a barrel swivel to cork, then a leader of fluorocarbon 15 or 20# about 18-24" long, and then the #8 mustad ni-cad treble 3X strong.

      Places:

You have Dana's cove right by you-really good spot to yak and wade-get a hooksetter or hook/line (Can't remember name of maker) at Academy and study it and use google earth or bing and look at aerials. Also, Carancahua cove by State Park-yak along grass shorelines sight casting for reds/trout. If surf is flat and green, forego the yaks and wade surf tossing corks, spoons, plastics and tops-best to hit right at sunrise-make sure ya got a do-net or a 25' stringer to keep fish from being too near you or the Man in the Grey Suit may take your leg! Youcould yak the surf also, but you better stay away and respect other surf fishermen or ya may get a new lure (like right in your face) from someone ya intruded upon.

      Good luck.

Galveston Island State Park has 2 nice yak put ins and it's a great starting out point for the west bay.

Thanks for the help fellas. Pending surf conditions, would it be best to fish the surf at first light and then do the kayak thing in the evenings?

Conditions will probably change before you get here, but right now the forecast is for 2-3 ft surf for this weekend. I'd plan for the bay side and go for the surf if it looks good.

Not in a kayak, and especially with 2-3 foot seas. On foot, yes.

Fish early (daylight) and late (sunset) shallow shorelines.......bring "OFF", lots and lots of "OFF".

ROBALO gave good advice . So far , the weather forecast could be a lot better I'm afraid . You would want to fish an area where the wind isn't whipping up the water , a protected shoreline .
