  • Surfside Area Recon & Report

After the fog started to lift, I left Angleton around 8:30. I was planning on trying my spot in Drum Bay, but when I got down there the surf was too inviting to pass up. At access 4 it appeared to be murky green to the beach with about 1 to 1-1/2 foot swells. As is usual when I got in the water it was a little rougher than it looked from the beach; about 1-1/2 to 2 foot swells. Visibility about 1-1/2 to 2 feet and the water was still kinda cold (maybe 68-70). Went to the back of the second bar and cast a 3/4 oz gold spoon probably 25-35 times with no hits. I did see a good bit of mullet but they were pretty relaxed. Then went to Drum Bay and the water was much warmer (I would estimate 7 to 9 degrees warmer than the surf). Visibility about 1-1/2 feet. Threw a 1/4 oz gold spoon & plumtreuse assassin for about 45 minutes with no hits. I was by myself and when an old truck full of young guys showed up driving around erratically in the area, I cut my wade short, got back to the truck & left. As I was pulling out these geniuses had decided to take their old truck into the marsh and were sunk axle deep. I felt kinda bad about not trying to help them, but these days you just never know. On my way back, I saw another genius stuck in the ditch in front of the Dever's bait camp. Holidays bring out some real knuckle heads.

Thanks for the report ! Years ago I strayed off the track back there gawking at the water . My right side tires got into muck covered in vegetation and I got high centered . Fortunately I had planned on sleeping in the truck and fishing the next day so I had provisions . I called my buddy and he brought me shovels and I lay under the truck to dig out .

Getting stuck is no fun.. but it sounds like they were not being wise about it at all, I bet they learned a valuable lesson.

Thanks for the nice report Shutout. Water temp in the bay hit 70 (finally!!), was 65 Friday. I caught a few dinks in West bay, missed a few also. The throwbacks I had were FAT-all between 14.5 to 14 7/8".

I bet the surf was more like 68 when you hit it. Burrrrr!
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.
