  • Christmas in March

Went out for a foggy morning in Christmas today. Made several wades along the North shore so we had the wind at our backs. The water was pretty clear, about 2-3 foot visibility, and fairly nice color, but no bait showing. Started out throwing black topwaters, pink topwaters and eventually switched to corkies in darker colors. We'd been wading for a couple hours when we finally got a blow up, and then the first keeper trout. The darker color tops hadn't been working for me, so I switched to a bone SS junior. One of the guys got a great trout blow up and reeled in a 22" so I'm thinking we're gonna start getting a good trout bite. Next thing I know something attacks my spook and instead of a headshake it starts running. What I'd thought was a great trout was a 21" red! I'll take it!
We continued to wade without much else and the wind finally started picking up, so we decided to get back on the boat a do some drifts. I switched to my new spinning rod with a popping cork and 4" gulp and we started to speed drift. The wind was blowing so hard that, even with a drift sock, we were flying across the bay. We got some decent hits and brought in a few rats and a bunch of good reds. I ended the day with a 26 1/2" red. It was a tough day but worth every minute.
I'd like to give a personal shout out to Allen Pierce- Custom Coastal Rods. He made me the stick that I needed to improve my game and it is awesome!! It's exactly what I asked for! Thanks Allen!
