jig head debate

Woke up early enough this morning to catch the last hour of the guru of trinity bay's fishing symposium. Topic of colored jig heads came up and of course the great one denounced these in favor of natural lead heads as fish basically didn't care about colors. Six of one, half dozen of others but I've been using the chartruese knotty hookers from baad lately and have gained a fair amount of confidence in them. I can't say if they're that much better or worse than natural lead but I do believe color matters. Thoughts?

Plain lead is fine, and short shank hooks.

I don't have any colored lead heads and haven't really ever used them. I hope it doesn't matter because I already have too many variables in my fishing equation than I can solve in a lifetime.

I do have some of the knotty hooker jig heads (plain). Chickenboy gave them to me when we we're fishing next to each other last fall. I like them. Real sharp hook.

I have a question regarding this - what do the guides use? I have been with several and both used plain jig heads. I have caught fish on both, but I will say that the colored ones just seem to add a little bit more complete pattern to the jigs. Especially the ones with eyes on them. Seems like yellow or charteuse are better, maybe because they can see it better or maybe the added colormakes it look like a whole baitfish. Of course, colored ones cost more, hence less $ outlay for the guides...

When I see the Aqua Pimp rolling around with a pocket full of colored jig heads, I'll start to worry about it. Until then, I need to limit the madness in my tackle box.

I've used em both and no difference here. I do however use Baad marine exclusively. Knotty hookers are da chit!!

I don't use plastics that much but I use both . Probably a dash of color doesn't hurt . I bite off some of the plastic's head to merge the jighead seamlessly with the bait's body . I think the jighead / plastic body profile is more important than jighead color .

I use chartreuse jig heads but I doubt that matters. The weight in a certain situation is by far the most important aspect.

I've had both, but I typically use a plain lead head. Gulfcoast13 is absolutely right about the knotty hookers.

I have used all colors possible and they all work. I like the lead heads that will keep the worm attached. I use primarily Kelly Wigglers short shank on jerk baits and the long shank on paddle tail swimming worms . That is what I have had more success using. Also , I like Baad marine knotty hookers also!

I do have a bit more confidence in the chartreuse ones. My logic is that it looks like an eye, and predatory fish target the eyes/heads of bait. Many fish (eg: rat reds) have evolved eye spots near the tail to mis-direct an attack.

Doesn't matter near as much as being on feeding fish, but I still like 'em.

Mostly use the long shank bass assassins with the gamakatsu hooks. Screw locks rule.
