There's plenty of oyster reefs and that is where I'd key my fishing efforts if I was going for a reef. Some oyster reefs are in 15'+ deep water. I think "dumping" would be an issue throwing junk in the bay.

Anything you introduce to the eco system other than natural base components will negatively impact the bay. Even though the intention may be a positive one it will have a bad impact. Most artificial reefs usually will consist of granite or dredge type medias. In some cases barges and ships have been sunk for this but recent studies show this to be ultimately bad as the oxidation breakdown of the metals introduces mercury and other roxic compounds during the breakdown periods. Not a good idea without a sanction from EPA and gulf coast authority's.

Concrete and oyster shell work well... they both will attract oyster spawn. Check with Marine Fisheries and Fish and Wildlife to make sure you don't need any permits. There's an office in the Clear Lake Area. Also, you'll want to place it in the right area of the bay.. mid and upper bay will be better, if you get too close to the pass the reef will die due to oyster parasites.

I was just reading about some freshwater ones TPWD put out, mostly PVC construction, then there is the tire reef, just curious,
I remember something about someone wanting to put a lot of cement reef balls on the tire reef, completely free, but I think back then it got trashed because of too much red tape and no one knew anything about it.

Obviously not talking about making a trash dump, I think most people are smarter than that, now.
I remember when the coast guard would just drop old batteries in the water when changing them .

              thanks for the responses.

heck , west bay grass never existed until a lot of the man made tubes and other structures where built

Agree, but actually the grass was there until shrimpers scoured it out-along with dredging.

It would be cool but I bet there is still miles of red tape to go through. Even more cya in todays world.

When I was a kid, before the San Luis Pass bridge was built, lower West Bay had huge areas of grass beds.
