  • Need Help/Advice on Boat Lift Issue

OK, so I put a new trolling motor on the skeeter and it hangs out about 8" from the bow, so now the boat has to be about 8" back from the forward bulkhead/dock; whereas, it used to butt the boat's nose to the dock and lifted alright in my lift, but now because it's 8" aft of the dock/bulkhead, the front strap wants to slide off and drop the bow in the water while the aft end hangs in the rear strap. When I tried to lift the boat last Sunday, the dang front strap started to slide while the aft of the boat kept lifting. My lift is cross-membered by I Beams-sort of the typical, older lifts. I tried knocking the I Beam aftward and moved it about 2-3" after about 20-30 swings with a pick ax like tool (the misses really hurt).

My thought now is to maybe run a SS Cable to tie off the two straps (aft and forward) so they cannot part/slip and they stay a set distance. I tried a rope, but rope stretches too much.

Anyone else had this sorta issue with their straps where one wants to slide off and if so, how'd ya EASILY fix it w/o calling Boat Lift or tearing up your boathouse?

My boathouse is a fully enclosed boathouse-looks like a garage-my house was one of first canal houses in Jam Beach.

Thanks for your input-I can try to post pics after this weekend. It's kinda like putting a 22' boat in a lift designed for a 20' boat.

Notch out your deck so that you can pull up to where you used to and the trolling motor will fit in the notch?

Yeah, tie the straps together with poly rope that doesn't stretch. That's what most people do.

You might try installing a quick release mounting bracket under the new trolling motor and just remove the motor when storing....it's easy as pie and removes and reinstalls on the bracket with little effort. You have to have a plug-in for the trolling motor to do this, of course. I'm pretty sure most brands have this bracket, at least MinnKota does. Beats the expense of dock modification, maybe. Hope this helps..............

Termo, get ahold of Jerry and go take care of that fix for him. Nobody cares about watching a video and if you'll swing by, I'll go with you and talk Jerry into a quick fishing trip while you expedite the small task. After all you're the one that's top five contractors on Emily's list for the area and me, I just like to fish, bra.

Reverse the slings pitch and start backing in. That should be fun to sit out in a lounge chair and watch you do after a couple of 12 packs.

That almost was what I did!!

Quick release bracket aint an option-hard wired motor.

I'll try the poly rope tying the straps-then Stainless steel cable if poly don't work.

It could be because I waxed the boat and made it slippery-that'll teach me to wax the dang boat!!

If the lift is all c channel it's probably a lift master lift, they are right down the street and can adjust the straps for you. Everyone is different but it's normally 2-300 bucks.
