  • Privatizing the Red Snapper fishery?

Hey guys I'm exactly sure how all this stuff plays out being a noob on the rod n reel scene but I was aware of strict limits and seasons on red snapper. I recieved an email about the snapper fishery going more to the private sector but I thought the population was coming back pretty strong and that was the reason for a second season last year. Ive only been on one snapper trip and it was a paid charter, however I'm planning on getting a boat that will get me out to them on my own. Any thought/comments?

Comment period on red snapper giveaway scheme ends today

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is currently taking comments on a plan to further privatize the red snapper fishery. Shockingly, at this moment, more than 50 percent of all the red snapper available in the Gulf of Mexico is held by commercial fishermen. Amendment 40 would significantly increase the percentage that is held privately by giving - literally giving - additional shares of red snapper quota to a select few charter operators.

Amendment 40 is perhaps the most controversial amendment in recent history and was announced on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. It is the latest attempt to manage fisheries by reducing access to public resources. The comment period on Amendment 40 ends today, Jan. 23.

CCA members have been asked to comment against these schemes many times. This is an on-going battle because the federal management system simply doesn't work the way it is supposed to. We are up against a system that does not understand recreational angling and often acts like it doesn't want to. You need look no further than the fairly insulting decision to release this Amendment on Christmas Eve for evidence of that.

This comment period is a chance to oppose sector separation one more time, and it is an opportunity to send the message again that millions of recreational anglers cannot be dismissed. Please take a moment to comment on Amendment 40 by clicking HERE.

We would also encourage you to consider attending Gulf Council meetings in person to express your views on federal management of our fisheries. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council next meets in Houston, Texas, Feb. 3-6 at the Westin Galleria Hotel. Public testimony is scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m. on February 5

The Gulf Council is a bunch of commercial fishermen. THEY are the problem. I hope they do a trip off the coast of Somalia in a 16' johnboat with a 2 hp motor and a cup of gas and wave a US Flag really high.
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.
