  • Plugger Inspired Old School Fishing Photos

I enjoyed looking at the old school photos and commentary from the Rudy Grigar video. I dug into the archives and pulled out a couple of photos of my family's Plugger.

Grandad, early 80s cleaning trout. Requisite knit shirt, glad bag waders complete with frequent leaks, Rapala cleaning knife.

As he got older, wading hard all day evolved to setting his sail line. He had 1000 yards of 100# mono on a cable spool. In the thirty yards closest to the sail, there were 30 drop lines with jig heads. He used cocahoes and other soft plastics. He would wade out with it, get it underway, mind it from his reeling station then bring it back, wade out and check his lures. He did it darn near everyday from September to March every year when he came down to winter in Corpus. Man that guy could fish.

Same knit shirt, dickies work pants, slip on keds, straw hat and lot of resolve.

Way cool ! Thanks for sharing . Me and a buddy years ago happened on two guys sail line fishing CHRISTMAS Bay Area . I never knew about such a thing , wind blowing out a wooden bark with a billowing sail with trot lines . I asked a bunch of questions but these two were not talkative . Finally the one said to me " you ask a lot of questions , don't ya ? " . Time to leave . They were sifty looking , unfriendly , and I think up to no good somehow . That , or I was just annoying . Who , me !?

Do guys still sail line fish ? Only saw it that one time . Does this constitute a charge of thread jacking ?

I know it's a lot of work , but it looks like fun for you younger guys who would camp over night with the kids . They would be excited to see what was reeled in .

Sail lining is still legal and TPWD outlines the requirements. I haven't seen it much in the mid or upper coast. There was quite a club of old guys that sail lined down in Corpus back in the day. I don't know how many folks still do it. I always enjoyed fishing with rod and reel but going out to run the hooks when he would reel the sail back in was a hoot. I remember a couple if times we had several good fish on and the sail, floats and hooks were going every which way. What a hoot.

Great pics. Gotta get with my uncles to see if they got any of my grandfather. He fished and shrimped Matagorda for many moons. Carla took out the house on the river and rebuilt and finally sold it in the 90's. I had pictures of them with trout covering every inch of the pier. Great memories. I got some of my dad when he was 9 at texas city holding a big trout he caught. Caught many a trout off our pier in Matagorda.

How do you scan photos . Use the printer scanner and it can be sent to your computer ?
