  • Guy Catches Huge Amberjack w/o a Pole

Quite a fight w/o a rod and reel and then to just throw it back. I'm guessing because it might be illegal.

Handlining can be fun. Pretty good way to bottom fish but the loops of line can make a mess.

I wonder where he was catching AJs so close to shore?

That is nuts, what would have happened if that sucker pulled him in! Cool to see him release it. When we were in Cabo, we saw guys fishing with just a spool all the time. Really cool.

I've caught bunches of snapper on a hand line. Worked on a commercial boat when I was a teenager. If I hung anything huge id just tie it off to the pin rail and either let it wear itself out or escape. Caught a ling that was well over 70 lbs that way one day.

I felt like I cheated, as soon as I realized it was more than I could handle I tied him off and let him wear himself out fighting the boat. After that I just pulled him in and gaffed him. I was plenty proud of him when I got ahold of him though. I was probably all of 16 at the time.
