  • My First Deer

On Saturday we headed to Vanderpool, TX (Bandera County) to hunt a friend of ours' property. Weather was horrible but we toughed it out! My dad and I climbed into the blind on Sunday morning and saw a ton of spikes and big does, but I wanted to wait and see if a buck would walk out. Anyways we ended packing it in because we didn't see any and it was raining/sleeting/snowing. My brother and I got back into the blind about 3:30 that afternoon and I was going to settle for a doe or spike. Well sure enough a couple minutes after the feeder went off, 3 big does showed up. I was watching them eat when I saw movement off to the right and sure enough a little 5 point walks out. I watch him for a couple minutes and make sure he's legal and everything, then I line up a shot and steadied my breathing. Finally I squeezed off a round and put it right behind his shoulder and he just calmly walked off and laid down about 10 yards from where I shot him. I dropped him with a 6,8mm SPC at about 100 yards. Anyways after that I was shaking so much!! It was kinda cool to see my grandpa proud of me/my dad because he is introducing us to hunting. Even though my grandpa wasn't in good enough shape to make it to the blind he still had a blast! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Outstanding! I still get excited after I shoot one and I've lost count of how many I've shot. That's what keeps you going back.
      Shut up and FISH!!

Congratulation mini-x... I don't know of anyone that didn't shake and breathe heavy the 1st time they shot a buck. Enjoy those times with your dad and granddad while you can. I grew up hunting with mine and shot my first deer when I was in the 3rd grade and that was a looooong time ago; but I still remember every second of it.

Congratulations Mini-x, even though it's not a wall hanger, those make for good eating. Enjoy the time with dad and grandpa, you will never forget those moments.

Well done young man. Good job on the narrative, great post.
Be sure to savor the hunt and who you are with more than the actual pulling of the trigger, But the first buck with your folks is a great feeling. Enjoy the moment.
