  • Hook Help

Fishing on a friend's pier Friday night and tried some different lures. I used the lure(3" 3D Minnow) below and hooked into a nice trout but came unbuttoned. Hooked into a really large fish, but hook straightened out. I knew those hooks would be too small. Any of you have any suggestions on what size hooks(no trebles) to replace the too small trebles? Thanks!

Oh, I did catch a few. One on 1/4 oz silver Sprite Spoon, friend caught two on multi-colored Super Spook, and the others on Bone Spook Jr.

I think it might just be a cheesy hook they use on the lure. I have caught some pretty big reds on #10 treble hooks...if not maybe try some mustad singles

I would try and find out what they use on the SS jr and match that. That's what you caught your big trout on wasn't it??
Wish I knew what they use.

Switch them out with a little more durable saltwater hook, but make sure it is the same size.

Super Spook Jr's use a #4 most are VMC 9650PS, those might be a little big for that bait. The #6 however would work good. You might try the VMC 9626PS in the #6, they are a little more heavy duty and should work fine.

Did I misunderstand? Are you looking for single hooks?

I would much prefer single hooks over trebles, especially on a lure this small.

the smallest single hook I use on hard baits is the 1/0 live bait gamakatsu with the ring. I think those might be too big for that small of a bait. the problem with going to a single hook is you have to double the split rings to get the hook to be the right angle. I'd find some stout #6's and stick with trebles. That's a great bait in the lights.

If you really just want a single, but don't want to double up on the split rings, just cut one or two tines off of an appropriate sized treble. Rich

changing the hook size too dramatically will probably adversely affect the way the bait swims.

                        Thanks!
I'll experiment and go with what works best.. I appreciate the input!

I prefer single hooks too. I use singles on most of my topwaters especially when fishing floating grass. I'd try an #1-2 Gamakatsu Live Bait with Ring hook. I've used them on small crankbaits before with good success. These hooks have a little thicker gauge on them than the standard treble so it may effect the action on those lures. You're going to have to test them to see.

Thanks Capt Chavez! I did not know they had the hook with ring in #1 or #2. That will probably work real well. I use 2/0 on SS Jrs and they work !!
