Ive had that same problem this year, when its ice cream clear and flat I catch a few but nothing like when im having to hop every 30 seconds when a big roller comes in, my .02 is water may be tooooo clear and too calm, that'd be my guess, this year ive murdered them and im the only one in sight because everyone else slept in cause its "too rough"

Too clear is not good but " trout green " water is so named for a reason . I don't know but the last time I fished good surf conditions with bait present , I caught nothing . I must say I admire your pluck for giving a rough surf a go and you were rewarded with success . Going against conventional wisdom sometimes pays off . My fishing buddy says there are no rules . To an extent he's right . I've read articles of guides down south taking a short cut over skinny water and blazing past big trout in shallow , hot water in the middle of the day ..... They shouldn't have been there . So go out and make some new rules and blaze a new trail . Good luck !
