Me and Happyshaker stayed overnite at the SLP ramp a few nites back to do some nite fishing by the lights. We had heard they were tearing them up on previous nites but saw no action and we decided to take a snooze in the truck and leave at first light. We hit the old peer and still no luck, and decided on just going to the Guts by Bird Island. As soon as we were pulling up, I saw small schools of bait fish and large tails and fins breaking the water. Anchored and I proceeded to have a great morning of fishing and quickly caught my limit on redfish, but happyshaker was having trouble from not being able to net it before it got off or just breaking the line when a monster hits (all because he dosent use wire rigs and refuses to take any advice on the matter). We were planning on leaving before midday and since he wasnt catching any he wanted to go. I made a deal with him, I told him we have about another 10-15 shrimp in the live well and when they are gone we can go. So as threw our last few shrimps and I noticed one of his new rods laying just of the side of the boat in the water and told him to put in the rod holder. And this wasnt the first time I mentioned that habit of him just laying the rod in front or back of the boat w/ bait in the water, and how I've seen many a rod go into the drink. Well just like other times he says that it will be fine there. He finally lands a good size red and puts it in the boat when out of the corner of his eye he sees his other rod being yanked out of the boat and ask if i can reach it. Its cork end of the rod left it floating about 2' 1/2-3' from the boat, and as I reached out to hook it w/ the pole it literally swam away into the deep never to be seen again. OUCH!!!!!
Here is a video of me that day after just putting one in the boat.
