  • Flying fish

When I was at rollover this past week I saw a single black topped black winged flying fish. I was skeptical that it was one, but after searching the Internet and thousands of photos later it was one. I've seen them occasionally around the jetties but never in shallow murky water. It was pretty cool to see it from 20 feet above the surface of the water. Is anyone seeing them offshore right now?

        Flying fish

Well if you've never been to rollover and fished the gulf side on a low tide, you are fishing 20 foot above the surface of the water sometimes. I was fishing my lights when I saw it come up. It didn't jump out of the water it was just drafting in the current on the surface.

I was shocked to see it in the pass, but it was there.

Are you sure it wasn't this?

I've never seen flying fish close to shore. I thinking you saw what kenny posted.

Probably a miniaturized flying saucer. Never seen a real flying fish. Maybe someday I will. Lord Bless.

                Flying fish

                It looked like this picture.

It looked very similar to a mullet except for the huge pectoral wing fins.

Flying fish looks just like a mullet, but the ones I have seen have had transparent "wings". Hard to tell if wings are colored or not when "flying". Still cool to watch!

Odd fish isn't it ? The words " flying " and " fish " just don't seem they should be used together , Like " gorilla ballerina " .

We were offshore last year making a run to another spot and something smacked me right in the chest. Looked down and a flying fish was flopping around on the deck.

That's exactly what I saw. It looked black in the water.
