    Rig Fishing

    The last couple of weekends I have gone to several rigs offshore about 17 miles. All I have caught is sharks and a couple of small lings. What else is out there to catch that close in? How far do you have to go to find dorado?

    We have been fishing with live bait (mullet, croaker, shrimp, Piggies) free line. I also put a couple of lines close to the bottom with both cut bait and live. Haven't got trolling mastered yet. Love to hear your experiences!

      instead of staying at the rigs cruise and look for grass matts or any other floating structure/shade. They will generally be under there. Cruise around it...chuck a handful of bait...see if anything comes out and grabs it. Once you do hook up do NOT pull that fish into the boat. Keep him hooked and swimming and the others will hang out as well. Soon as you boat him they gone.

        X2 on Baby Tran's comment. Try trolling a Boone red/white feather jig tipped with a sardine. Try further out-BUT watch the weather!!

        For trolling kings, try some Russell lures and rapalas. Just above an idle speed.

        Gulps work great on chicken dolphin-get a bunch-they'll tear em up and use a med/hvy baitcast rod and a reel with 17# test for the chickens-you can also make a tandem rig using gulps and hook em 2 at a time.

            Cheapie spec rigs are hard to beat for catching chickens on weed lines. We used to hook two and put that rod in the holder and then assault all their buddies. I would slowly cruise the weed line and look for what I called the light show. Also do NOT forget to keep an eye on your prop wash as many curious ling have been caught out of the prop wash. If fishing out of galveston and looking for something a little different run the buoys headed out and bounce from one to another. I'd circle each buoy several times, back up to it and oscillate the engines and the drift away a couple feet and look for my ling to pop up. If one pops up but not close enough just slap your rod tip in the water a few times and he'll cruise over for a closer look. Also fishing the nearshore rigs take some ribbon fish out with you and free line them off the boat. For kings it's really hard to beat the russellures but I was a big fan of the rapala divers in red/white or the blue/green combo. 4-5mph is about perfect for them. The big russellures are adjustable divers. I would run them at differnt depths until I found the magic depth

                You can get ribbon fish just about anywhere that has offshore bait (Boyd's smittys etc). To get the proper action on russellures or the rapalas you need a rod with a nice soft tip. When it starts vibrating you are at the right speed
