From dallas , yep , sadly it will always be because of ignorance and ignoring the warnings . Even aware people fall victim . Years ago i sat next to a dentist at a continuing education seminar who said he and a friend were fishing a slp gut . Looked at is friend , fished , looked again , and all he saw was his friends hat floating by . Took a step into eternity . Wear a pfd !

Can happen to any of us. I've had my feet swept out from under me and so has Reeltime. We're both lucky.
          Shut up and FISH!!

Sad news for sure. People just don't take warning signs seriously.

Chopper has been in the air most of the day. Some early a.m. Jogger is going to get a surprise. Sad situation. Unfortunately becoming quite common.

This particular individual went to the same school as me. He was from Dallas, but he has lived down here for a little while.

Prayers sent for the family. Wearing a pfd is not really that hard. I just don't understand why so many refuse to when venturing into dangerous waters such a SLP & MOB

I don't like to fish fast water like that, as it turns the sandy bottom into a kind of quicksand that can disappear from under your feet. It's sharky, shoaling, shifty, and devious - many a sailing ship in the old days laid her bones in those waters. I feel bad that so many feel a need to fish there, as there is just good fishing elsewhere.

I'm not real well traveled but I know of no other fish pass in the US that is as dangerous as SLP. I've been to The Race by outer Long Island Sound where the water goes over 5 MPH and boils in huge whirlpools that can jack you around - yet we fished it from little boats all the time and nobody died that I heard. They say some of the harbors were real bad before they built jetties, even the ones at Galveston and Surfside. The sandbar bottom felt good until there was a soft gully ledge that would drop off to 30 feet. Now you're swimming.

Imagine the last thoughts of these poor folks as they were carried with the current at 5 MPH or more, watching their spot of land disappear. Many are so scared they go into a kind of shock after fighting the current so hard their muscles just gave up. Drowning people don't yell, scream, wave, or do anything, they just go under. Amen.

I think if you're smart you'd fish with a bright red/orange Mae West inflatable vest with a PLB emergency beacon. All the pros wear inflatables with the gas cartridge and pull cord - and the new designs aren't too bad. Don't wear camo - the helicopter won't be able to find ya. Not a bad idea if you own a boat too - it'll have a Coast Guard certificate on the label and count as a PFD. Type I or Type II.

I am not a wussie, and I don't fish the surf or bay with a life jacket on - no way! But San Luis Pass is a proven killer. If you're not going to follow what the No Fishin' signs say at SLP, at least have respect for your body and your soul - wear a PFD. About 100 bucks for a good looking inflatable, kinda looks cool. All the Coasties wear 'em and they don't mind too much.
