Couldn't resist a trip out on to the reef for some fly fishing today. For the past year or so, I have been going here and there, trying to fish way too much territory and not spending enough time anywhere to really learn it. So, today, I went back to some of my old fishing ground - just a short paddle from the house. As long as conditions permit, I am determined to fish this area by fly alone until I know it inside out.
Fortunately I got out today before the seas from ex-hurricane Fred hit. I paddled my kayak out to the inside of the reef (near where I posted pictures a few days ago), then got out and waded.

Fly fishing on the reef. I am wading in about 4 and a half feet of water, reef tops just below surface.

I tried several different flies. As it turns out, the most effective fly today was my "redfish special" spoon fly that I tie specifically for Galveston Bay redfish. In the crystal clear water, the fly draws in almost everything. In this shot, I have a jack on the line. Sorry for the picture - but I am doing the best I can to manage rod and camera and keep fish on.

I caught and released the fish. A small jack - maybe a pound and a half, but serious fun on the fly.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to manage a fly rod, fish, and camera while in nipple-deep water. So - no fish pics.
I came back in for a break after about an hour, having no idea that the seas were on the way. Within the next hour the seas had grown to breakers right where I had been wading, and the water clarity had gone down considerably from the bottom sand picked up in the waves.
I am hoping that the seas subside tomorrow so that I can get out there again.
