  • Propeller damage

What was this damage caused by? I was in the Offats Bayou channel that connects the ICW to Offats Bayou and I suddenly felt a weakness in the engine when I was powering up. Any clues?

Nah. I'm lookin at a Solas stainless steel prop. They cost a pretty penny, but I've heard some great things about them. Anyone have any experience with Solas?

That is a fatigue fracture that has been cracking, (propagating) over a period of time. Based on where the crack originated (in the center of the "thumbnail-looking" area near the center of the fracture) you possibly did something to slightly bend or take a chunk out of the blade which made the blade out of balance which caused it to vibrate. Over time the crack progressively grew until it was large enough to ultimately fail when you throttled up. I see these types of fractures all the time. I know you mentioned you were getting a stainless replacement but you may want to take the damaged one to Baumann and have it repaired for a spare.

You can repair a prop that has a whole blade missing? Is it really worth having it repaired? This is just the stock aluminum prop that came with the engine. I've never noticed any cracks in the prop in the 2 years I've had this prop.

Baumann replaces blades all the time. As long as the hub is good they can repair it to near new condition. Call Louie and discuss it with him. It's cheaper than you think and it is always nice to have a spare prop and nut/cotter pin on the boat. Ask anyone who has damaged a prop a long way from the ramp. Most who have only experience that feeling once.

get the aluminum prop[ repaired at Baumann's and get the Solas-I have 2 and no issues with my mercs. Aluminum is worthless in the bays except as an emergency back up should you shear or damage a SS prop. You could easily damage your gears with an aluminum prop that is off due to simply running into shell-the vibration can farge up your gears in lower unit.

the repair is not expensive and Louie has a quick turnaround-ask him if he has a used Solas also and maybe save some $.

Get rid of the aluminum except as a spare!!!
