  • Pierce marsh in a skiff????

I was out in my yak today at Pierce Marsh (Hitchcock TX, past the bridge). I saw two shallow running PBs running out of the marsh about noon.

Just wondering how my 16 ft Carolina Skiff would fare back there? I never thought about it being deep enough, but these guys were in bigger boats than mine and they didn't appear to be any more shallow running hulls than the CS???

    Any help appreciated. thanks Rich

Capt Scott Null makes a living out in those marshes fishing for redfish in his East Cape. You can certainly get back there in a PB but it can be tricky. There are a number of channels. Your Carolina Skiff hull will float back there but you may be dragging your skeg min a bunch of places. The channel into the marsh south of the RR bridge is deep but I would recommend your first trip back there at high tide. Go slow.

      Pierce marsh in a skiff????

I don't even mess with it unless the tide is up. Been stuck back there quite a few times. I've also caught a pile of reds in there at times. Check it out on google earth and go slow at high tide.
Make sure the tide doesn't go out on you while your in there either.

Thanks, guys. that is kind of what I expected. It was a high tide.

It seemed to me that the tides were supposed to be falling all day yesterday, starting 8 a.m. or so...., but the tide seeemed to be coming in at Noon at the marsh. Anyone know what is the best tide table to use for back in the marsh, or how many hours to adjust a regular reading? thanks, rich

p.s. This is only for a couple of weekday trips a year, so I won't be cleaning out any honey holes.

I live way up the diversionary and we're about 2 to 2.5 hrs behind on the tide change - probably a bit less in pierce. Best thing i have found is an app I have on my phone called Simple Tides that gives you a pretty good look at what it's gonna do for the day at the nearest station and you can extrapolate from there. I'm sure there are better apps out there though - maybe someone else will weigh in and post em up.

Thanks...Yesterday, according to one tide chart, the tides were to start falling at 8:15 at the Galveston opening. If I add 2.5 hours on to that...that would put the start of dropping tides at 10:45. I'd guess I saw those boats around 11:30 or so, so they were exiting before the dropping tides left them high and dry.

I don't have a boat as shallow as the East Cape, so those fish may have to stay un-caught by me, unless I want to paddle the yak back up there. Even with my yak's trolling motor add-on, it still seems like a long way from Louie's. regards, Rich
