Surf fishing questions?

For a while now ive been wanting to wade in the surf and try it out and since ive been seeing so many people having luck in the surf right now i'd figured i'd give it a try next week when im at my bay. I have a few questions though:

- I wade in the bay alot, so does fishing the surf have the same principles as in what color of lure to use for different color water and things like that?
- Best time of the day?
- Any lure specifications (color/type) ?
- What to look for as in signs of fish?

yes - daybreak - anything works in the surf if they are biting - bait or birds working.

If it's flat -- get in it! Early morning or late afternoon topwaters are my favorite. Chrome / Blue spooks, big ones.

When it's flat that's the place to be, no question about it. Topwaters, spoons, and live bait all work great! Also, I like looking for wash outs on the beach and fishing in front of them. Typically I fish the second gut but if it's absolutely glassy I will fish the first gut. Good luck and give us a report!

Do some scouting on low tide before you just show up in the dark am to fish. On low tide look for the guts that run from the first gut to the second and only fish those that are covered with bait, thats where the bigger trout will be. while your buddies are catching lots of smaller fish you can pull some of the bigger trout out. Don't be afraid to get there at 4am and fish the incoming and then the outgoing before sunrise. Stand on the 1st sand bar in pecker deep water and cast down the beach fishing the 1st & 2nd gut all the way down the gut not across it. you want to fish across the smaller guts that run from the 1st to the 2nd. the bait will already be in shallow water so they will be traveling down the guts not across, so your bait will be mimic that activity. I like a blue and chrome shedog or a Chartreause Shedog.
