Both the Garmin 740 and the Lowrance HDS 7 are good units.. the Lowrance has a little better screen..but supposedly the garmin has a little better GPS map.... I'd like to know what others have found out as well and personal experience since i'm in the decision phase of that one as well.

        Depth finder/GPS

I have a Garmin combo and Lowrance combo on my boat and I always use the Garmin for GPS and Lowrance for Depth/Fish. Wished the Garmin's depth was as good as the Lowrance.

I just bought the Lowrance Elite 7 HDI. I am new toelectronics but I have found it very easy to navigate for the novice likeme. The 3 page split screen is awesome. DownScan imaging is amazing. Whenadded next to sonar it gives you a great view of the bottom. Has a greatdisplay! Trackback feature allows you to scroll back and mark a waypoint. Iadded the Navionics Gold coastal card. I am very happy with my purchase.

I find the lowrance units are more user friendly, and the features of both elite7, hds 7 are incredible with structure scan and overlaying layers. On the new 7 you can replay your data on your computer, as well have inputs for go pro and such.

I just got the Elite 7 HDI-it's fine for what we use them for-they upgraded the plugs from previous Lowrance versions and are much better IMO-the old plugs rotted quickly in the sunlight over about 3 years. Garmin pizzed me off-I searched all over the net and found a decent priced one but the S&H fees were outrageous-plus the prices varied widely for the same unit and some ya had to buy the skimmer separately which was bull IMO-very poor marketing.

I'm having Sport Marine build me a B240 and John said the HDS 7 touch screen is really cool. I'm anxious to try it. I had the HDS 7 and liked it all right. I had some problems with it reading depth while on plane, but I think that was more on where the dealer put my transducer on it. I don't have personal experience with Garmins, but hear they are a quality brand also.

Got the Garmin 740S. The maps are good enough, HOWEVER, the depth sux. Sometimes the low water alarm sounds at double the set depth, in low water it locks up and need to reboot to clear. It is NOT very user friendly. Knowing what I know now, I would not get this unit.

Turn off the alarms. They are kinda useless anyway.
