I truly respected the GCCA and gave them money, got the bumper sticker. But over the years they moved their office to Washington DC and I'll say no more about them bastages along the Potomac. On the red snapper they screwed us and are now trying to make nice-nice with us old pharts who remember things like an elephant. Kinda let me down of dredging and seismic testing in the Lower Laguna Madre - and I was hotter than two bobcats in a burlap bag! The CCA lawyers in Warshingtooon had no time for little ole Sammie.
The CCA does some good things, like the fishing reefs like of Port Mansfield. Don't get me wrong. I just don't hang out with 'em or fish their tourneys enymore.

Enter the STAR or not, your choice! However, don't catch a tourney winner and then come on here and whine bcuz you're not entered!! No empathy nor sympathy from me! I cannot stand politics, but CCA does some good on occasion. One thing for sure, the ladies that work for CCA and handle all of the STAR paperwork are...um....very pretty.

well said Moe. As much as i fish id be insane not to enter even though i dont agree with their politics. Plus It'd kill me not to take their money if i caught a qualifying fish.Originally posted by Moe View PostEnter the STAR or not, your choice! Oh, you mean like the Galveston Bay Foundation?Originally posted by kenny View PostIt's easy to people to complain about and find fault with the CCA or any organization. What coastal organization do you belong to that has helped? That's what I thought....."Curmudgeon only pawn in game of life."

@ Kenny. No it wasn't rhetorical, I just thought it was amusing how he worded it. Didnt mean to start a political debate, just wanted to get people's opinions. Someone in here said it best and I've made my own decision and I think for what you pay for a years membership, a chance to win boats, trucks, ect, and the fact that they probably do use some of the money for some important things I'm gonna join.

Let me answer this the best I can, first.....Originally posted by Themadhunter View PostIs joining the CCA worth it? Someone told me they don't really do a whole lot. Any truth to that?
i like to support groups that support us.
They really don't do a whole lot, typical answer because people just don't know.
Mission StatementThe stated purpose of CCA is to advise and educate the public on the conservation of marine resources. The objective of CCA is to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of these coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public.
You are going to get all kinds of responses when it comes to CCA.
Ibtsoom would refer to them as communist bastages because he comes from a commercial fishing family. Ironically one of the reasons CCA was started to begin with. Not throwing arrows at Ibtsoom but I have family that were/are commercial fishermen and in fact at one time probably some of the biggest outlaws on Galveston Bay. I, however look at CCA in a different way.
So to your question, is it worth it? It's your money and only you can answer that!
There is not enough space here to mention the things CCA has done over the years. From building and supporting the worlds two largestest hatcheries to supporting the TP&WD through grants and donations from night vision goggles to boats.
Everyone refers back to the good ole days of GCCA and thats exactly what it was, the good ole days. Things change and like it or not you need to change with them. CCA had to grow and expand, its all strength in numbers and thats where the STAR comes in.
The STAR tournament despite what some may believe is not a money making event. It's sole pupose is being a membership drive.
So when people say I only join because of the tournament thats pretty much what CCA wants you to do. When it comes to getting things accomplished in Austin and Washington strength comes in numbers, see NRA...
The STAR is a stand alone organization, None of your entry fee goes to CCA, it goes straight back into the tournament.
CCA makes its money from its fundraising banquets that are conducted throughout each State chapter. This is the money that goes into the general operating fund. Since its formation in the late 70's CCA has donated 10's of millions to Coastal conservation.
Is it the best Conservation organization out there, in my opinion yes. I encourage you to visit the CCATexas web site and judge yourself.
Is it perfect, he!! know, but find something better. As many years as I was involved they have done plenty thier fare share of things that I disagree with but they have done a whole lot more good.
Hope that cleared a few things up for you!
