  • New Puppy Question?

Getting ready to bring home my 5 month old rescue from the shelter in about a week so I'm getting everything ready. I've started to do some research on dog foods and just wanted to get some recommendations on what y'all have had luck with. I was thinking of going with diamond naturals brand they sell at tractor supply.
    Thanks

    Blue Buffalo, hands down.
After I switched my rescue to it the shedding has decreased big time and her coat is so shiny now.
She is as healthy as can be.
A little expensive but she doesn't eat as much as she used to on the other food.
Good luck on the new member of the family

You want the first ingredient to be a protein. If you find one with two proteins as the first and second that is best. Me personally I use pro plan.

        New Puppy Question?

We use Diamond Puppy for our puppy Pearl and she's thriving. We also use it for our other foster Ralph

I switched my pups to 4health, tractor supplies new house brand. It has really high reviews on all the websites that I've checked and the dogs seem to like it. I used to feed diamond foods but the dogs never really did seem to like it.

If you google this you'll find it's about the most controversial things on the planet - with groups that are vehemently either for or against each and every type of food there is out there. Vets opinions are biased in that they want to sell the brands that they carry and promote.. etc.. It's really hard to find a straight answer..

common sense says -- protein - dogs are not herbivores and they dont need squash and peas etc.. to survive and thrive. I feed my pointer purina dog chow and give her a chewable "dog" vitamin about every other day. She's healthy as a horse and about the happiest dog you'll ever find. I've also heard people say look at the first 3 ingredients of the food and if you wouldn't eat em your dog shouldn't.

One thing I will say is (and this is against what most everybody believes) dogs do not need to eat steak and chicken bones - I watched my cousins beautiful 2 year old lab die from a perforated intestine from eating the bone out of a T-bone steak.

Good luck with the new pup and I'm sure whatever you choose will be just fine.

              I agree with Ibtsoom.

In addition - grain based foods will produce more poop. Diamond is a chicken meal based formulation (re: other protein based brands) and will reduce the amount of poop w/o constipating. We feed the puppy formulation for the entire first year.

Haven't Blue Buffalo products had a lot of recalls in recent years? I seem to remember some...maybe it was a couple years ago or so.

I feed my mutt Purina Pro Plan. My dog is active all of the time, training for field trial competition and hunting, so this food makes sense. If the top pros across the country feed Pro Plan, then it's ok with me.

My Blue Buffalo dog is the picture of health and a frisbee catching machine. No problems with the food. She loves it and her whole health and coat are just amazing. Just my experiance.
                    Good luck with the pup!
